Onoda was a Japanese soldier who served in World War II. After the war ended in 1945, he was among the troops who continued to fight a guerrilla campaign in the Philippines, unaware that the war had ended. He stayed hidden in the jungle for 30 years until he was discovered and convinced to surrender by a former student of his who became a writer and traveled to the Philippines to find him. Onoda eventually returned to Japan and became a motivational speaker, sharing his experiences of perseverance and survival.
